Overvoltage in local grids — soon a Swedish challenge as well

Polar Energy’s Head of Strategy, Fredrik Karlsson, recently commented in Tidningen Näringslivet on the growing issue of overvoltage affecting local electricity grids across Europe — a challenge that is very likely to impact Swedish local grids in the near future.

We have already initiated discussions on voltage management with at least two of our local partners and are confident that more will follow.

Maintaining power quality, including voltage control, is the responsibility of the grid owner and cannot be delegated to entities like Svenska kraftnät.

Until now, voltage issues have largely centered around managing “flicker” — sudden voltage drops that can cause significant disruptions, particularly for industrial operations. But overvoltage, driven by solar panels operating at high capacity, will become an increasing challenge in Swedish local grids as well, especially during the summer months when demand is low.
